Mary and Joseph were ordinary working class people from a very small insignificant town called Nazareth. Soon after Jesus was born into the family truck loads of riches were brought into their home.
Unlike the nativity scenes we are familiar with; the gold, myrrh and frankincense were not presented in small boxes and bottles. The magi were rich people from the east and they were traveling long distances by caravan to visit a new born king. By middle-eastern custom they would not dare to show their face to a king with a few paltry gifts. The value of the gifts they came carrying was worth lakhs of dollars by today’s standard. The money from their sale probably took care of the family abundantly while in exile in Egypt and even later.
As we usher in the Chrismas season this year, let us welcome Jesus. Let us give Him a reception worthy of a king. Let us lay before Him that which He would consider valuble and precious – our souls. After all Jesus is the Lover of our Souls. Nothing else would satisfy Him more. Let us surrender and lay bare before Him our souls, even our scarred and wounded souls. and Jesus promises to bind our wounds and heal our souls.
Queen Sheba visited King Solomon bearing gifts. King Solomon sent her back with greater treasure than she brought Him. Jesus the King of Kings will never send us out empty handed this coming year. He will give us all we desire and ask for out of his royal bounty.
